Il Borro Estate, Tuscany
It was thanks to a day’s hunting back in 1985 that Ferruccio Ferragamo fell in love with Il Borro Estate which in those days belonged to Duke Amedeo D’Aosta. For years the Ferragamo family used to rent the estate until when in 1993 the chance to buy the whole property arose; including the ruined village and the grand villa which had been partially destroyed by a bomb in the last war, but also with that touch of magic which is immediately evident and makes one believe it is “a real act of faith”.
From that day onward, Il Borro country estate has slowly been restored to bring back the antique splendour of this place which was lost in time: private luxury villas, restored country houses and cozy apartments provide exclusive accommodation in this green, peaceful corner of Tuscany.
The estate which sits at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains in Valdarno now covers over 700 hectares (around 1755 acres) is now managed by Salvatore Ferragamo for whom the Borro is a way of life and who is successfully developing two major projects; those of offering its guests this corner of Tuscany and its luxury accommodation experience made of villas and exclusive country houses, and fine wines tasting to make their stay at Il Borro Estate an unforgettable experience.
Enjoy a luxury accommodation in Tuscany with the benefits of a hotel. Il Borro estate has all of its exclusive vacation villas, farmhouses and private homes ready for our guests: apartments are quite simple in their own design but quite comfortable with all the amenities: Tuscany’s rural life meets world’s luxury living.
The Ferragamo family had a good feeling about the estate: when the Aosta Dukes offered Il Borro for sale, the Ferragamos did not hesitate to buy it, having a clear vision of a nice, cozy retreat for their large family and an exclusive vacation resort for others coming to Tuscany. Since then, the family has restored, rather than modernized, the estate buildings, in order to offer luxury accommodations to the most discerning travelers: countryside farmhouses and village buildings, a row of villa apartments, shops and a church, all with wooden floors, earthen stone walls and terracotta roofs.
Inside Il Borro country estate, three exclusive, luxury villas with pool are available for rentals all year round, to fully enjoy Tuscany along with the best accommodation features.
Villa il Borro is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of this Tuscan estate. Built in the latter part of the 19th century by Austrian royalty, this imposing villa stands majestically above the medieval village with views leading out over the farm to the distant hills of Arezzo. Painstakingly restored in the 1990’s after extensive damages incurred both during the war and through the ravages of time, the villa now offers the ultimate luxury Tuscan haven for the most truly discerning guests. Combining a fascinating mixture of Austrian and Tuscan architecture on the outside and interior decoration in the European aristocratic style, to stay here is not simply a holiday destination but a real life experience.
Villa Chiocci Alto, situated at the highest point of the estate, almost resembling a Michelangelo villa carved from the very mountainside itself, commands what is possibly one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Tuscany. Decorated with impeccable taste – with an edge of decisive luxury – Chiocci Alto offers guests a stunning private villa with an ambience of total freedom.
Villa Casetta – Brand new three bedrooms villa immersed in the middle of the Merlot vineyards with a stunning garden ad infinity pool.

Tuscany wines and wine tours at Il Borro, Ferragamo winery…The estate, which extends over 700 hectares currently has 40 hectares of that land dedicated to vines. The soil has an excellent structure with a good sandy composition which denotes itself to the growing of five varieties of vine: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot.
In addition to wine, extra virgin olive oil from the centuries old groves that practically cover the hillsides has represented an extraordinary resource since the Middle Ages. The estate itself boasts over five thousand olive trees which every year produce a robust yet pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Wine, Olive Oil and Honey can be purchased year round either in our shop at Il Borro winery.
Tours & travel around Tuscany, outlet shopping tours…
Il Borro has the unique advantage of being situated at the very center of an area steeped in history and tradition. Remains of the ancient Roman road Via Clodia runs through the farm, demonstrating that the original Borro castle would have been at a mid-way point between the confines of the Tevere and Arno rivers in those days, with the chaotic and violent history of those times shaping the land and people living on it. Fortunately for the modern day traveler means of transport have improved and visits to the major historical and cultural cities can be achieved in one day.
Take a half day shopping trip to the designer outlets of Ferragamo, Ungaro, Prada, Gucci, Dolce e Gabbana, Fendi and Armani. Hot-air ballooning – possibly the most breathtaking way to see Tuscany, taking off from the Borro airstrip and landing wherever the air currents take you – a real adventure! Other activities include golf, horse riding, hunting, archery, yoga and more. Excursions to the major attractions can be booked at Reception.
