Visiting… Hotel de Russie

The Hotel de Russie is a luxury five-star hotel located in the heart of Rome between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo on the Via del Babuino. Living in Rome, I walked by The Hotel de Russie almost daily. The location, close to the Northern Gates of Ancient Rome, is within easy walking distance of most of Rome’s attractions… but far enough away to avoid the the crowds and noise at the Pantheon or Trevi Fountain hotels.

The Hotel de Russie has a clean, modern styling… which is not what you expect when you walk in from the streets of Rome and beyond the rather plain facade of the hotel. I’ve been there often and have always been impressed by the tranquil, almost serene feeling you get entering this hotel. It’s so quiet you forget you’re in a bustling city of 3 million people. It’s the perfect “in-Rome” get-away. When you’re in the hallways, it’s like you own a palazzo! Service at the hotel is prompt and professional. The concierge staff is polite, and very accommodating.

I was able to recently visit The Hotel de Russie and spend time with Giusy Guarracino, Sales Manager at Rocco Forte Collections. With Giusy as my guide, we were able to do an extensive, “behind the scenes” tour of the grounds.

My favorite feature of The Hotel de Russie has always been the secret garden and Le Jardin de Russie restaurant. Known as the “secret garden” because it’s hidden from the busy Via del Babuino, this extensive, terraced garden is a calm oasis in chaotic Rome. Soft lighting completes the beauty of the garden, which hosts the Stravinskij Bar in the spring and summer. A great place for dinner, but also for a caffe’ or appertivo!

For a break from walking the streets of Rome, the hotel also has one of Rome’s best health clubs and spa offering a hydropool, jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish steam bath, beauty treatments and gym.

Giusy took me into several rooms and there at least eight room categories available. They include:

  • Double Deluxe Room – Size: 40 sq m (432 sq ft)
  • Superior Deluxe Room – Room Size: 45 sq m (486 sq ft)
  • Junior Suite – Room Size: 55 sq m (594 sq ft).
  • Classic Suite – Room Size: 60-65 sq m (700 sq ft).
  • Executive Suite – Room Size: 65-70 sq m (753 sq ft).
  • Vaselli Suite – Room Size: 53 sq m (572 sq ft).
  • Popolo Suite – Room Size: 50 sq m (540 sq ft).
  • Picasso Suite – Room Size: 80 sq m (864 sq ft).

The Superior Deluxe Rooms feature a small sitting area. The Junior Suite might be best if you have children, as it has an open plan. Executive Suites all feature Secret Garden Views and some even have a second toilet.

The Vaselli Suite features a small private terrace. The Popolo Suite which is located on the top, 6th floor with great views of the rooftops of Rome and Piazza del Popolo, also features a terrace – and this terrace is about twice the size of the Vaselli Suite terrace.

The Picasso Suite is the Presidential Suite, also on the 6th floor, features a stylish mosaic bathroom, a guest toilet, a study area, and a private terrace with seating. Bang and Olufsen televisions are in the Junior Suite, Classic Suite, Executive Suite, Vaselli Suite, Popolo Suite and Picasso Suite rooms.

The The Hotel de Russie is beautiful and decorated in a very elegant, traditional Italian style. The “secret garden” is an excellent sanctuary after spending a busy day touring Rome.

I would suggest a room as high up, far back, and facing the garden (The bar and restaurant are open late). Or if you like city views, opt for a room with a private terrace and enjoy your “private space” overlooking the rooftops of Rome!
